About Me

My name is Becky Miller. I am a passionate and creative math tutor who has experience as a teacher and a tutor. I have also utilized applied math as a commercial credit analyst. I began tutoring my peers in high school and college. After graduating from college, I joined the Teach For America (TFA) program. I underwent TFA’s teacher training and taught summer school in Houston, TX. I then taught at a school located on the Navajo Nation in Tohatchi, NM. While teaching on the reservation, my students improved at least two academic grades/years in one semester (some improved as many as four grade levels).

After TFA, I volunteered as a math tutor at a drug and alcohol rehab center for youth. The first student I tutored required three hours to learn the zero times tables. I spent one hour with this student each weekday and after three months, he had the multiplication table memorized up through the twelve times table. I tutored many students, but this first student was the most memorable.

In 2013, I volunteered as a math tutor with a GED camp held at both First Presbyterian Church in Beaufort and Sea Island Presbyterian Church on Lady’s Island, SC. I was privileged to help three students prepare for and pass the GED exam.

I have served as a paid math tutor in a variety of settings. I first worked at the Milton Hershey School (MHS), a free, private school in Hershey, PA for traditional and social orphans, and students living below the poverty line. The best part of tutoring there was hearing students say, “Now, I understand!” or “This isn’t so hard!” I have heard similar comments during tutoring sessions in Beaufort, SC with middle school students, high school students and students at the Technical College of the Lowcountry (Beaufort, SC). A comment I hear regularly is, “I actually like doing math problems now. I want to do more!” Several of the students were failing and frustrated when I started with them. All of them passed their courses, deepened their understanding of math concepts and felt more confident after our tutoring sessions. I had similar experiences when I tutored high school and college students through Academic Choice Tutoring (ACT). I tutored one student who had failed the math portion of the PRAXIS twice. After six sessions, the student passed. I also completed SAT prep training through ACT.

I believe my extensive tutoring experience and passion for helping others, makes me an ideal math tutor. Feel free to contact me about setting up a free math tutoring consultation.

I have the patience, experience, competency, and enthusiasm to help students strengthen their math skills and confidence.
